My #1 Tip on How to Stay Hydrated

Some of you may know this about me and some of you may not, but in addition to being the author and illustrator of this blog, I’m also an office manager of a thriving dental office and a health and wellness coach. LOL, in my spare time I’m also a wife to an utterly amazing woman who is unconditionally supportive of me and my pursuit of fulfilling my dreams and a puppy momma to a quite active 22 month old golden retriever.

To say that I am busy is an understatement to say the least. However, to say that I’m happy is an understatement as well, because ALL of my wildest dreams are coming true. I’m unbelievably blessed. Miracle after miracle occur in my life daily, far too many to count. Just the simple fact that the sun rises every day and all the plants rotate around in space like they’re supposed to, is utterly amazing to me. My blood pumps through my veins and my lungs do their thing all by themselves without any thought or instruction from me. I connect with Eternal spiritual beings such as my dad and my ultimate creative source on a daily basis and I make all kinds of connections with all the right people. This list is so minuscule compared to ALL the amazing things that are happening. Honestly, it would be challenging to take a good look around you at all of these amazing things and see anything but a world that was completely and utterly thriving. I’m so happy to be alive.

But wait a minute, I thought this particular blog was about staying hydrated??? Oh yeah, I got caught up in the amazing wonders of the world. LOL. Another amazing wonder of the world is cucumber infused water. I used to think, Oh who cares. Water is water. BUT THEN, my friend, Mitzie shared with me the amazingness of putting a few slices of cucumber in my water and boy howdy was I wrong. W. R. O. N. G.

IMG_2769Have you tried it? If you’re not big on cucumber there are many other things you can try. I’ve tried lemon and strawberry together, lemon by its self, cucumber and lemon and cucumber by its self, which happens to be my favorite. Since I’ve learned this little trick, my water consumption has definitely increased. Besides increasing water consumption, adding cucumber to you water helps your skin and muscle repair and several other benefits. Check out this article I found where you’ll find more recipes for yummy infused water and the health benefits of simply adding a couple of slices of cucumber to your water.

My hope is that this blog will reveal little tips to you that will assist you in your continuation to thrive.

Where am I?

IMG_0792The picture you see here is a screen shot I took over the weekend when I was out and about and had no connection to wi-fi. I snapped a screen shot because as I waited for a moment of connection I experienced a FLASH of clarity.

I was looking some information to help me make some decisions and as I was waiting for the wi-fi connection to assist me with this information, an idea flashed across my awareness.

The idea was this, generally speaking, you don’t actually need to know the details of HOW to get to where you’re going. I know this idea seems to sound a bit beyond reason, but the truth is,  you only really need to KNOW where you are in this moment and every future event that occurs comes from this single moment of your NOW. Your NOW. Your NOW.

This is exactly WHY it’s so important to me how I feel, because I believe my future is created from my current moment. Therefore, with every fiber of my being I focus my attention on fun, freedom, health and abundance.

If Not NOW, When?

The years they just seem to fly by,… There’s absolutely no better time than this present moment to turn your attention towards health and happiness. I’m talking physical, emotional and spiritual health.

Modify your thoughts. Speak kindly to yourself. Love yourself enough to take the time to care for your well being. I don’t know about you, but I don’t wanna wake up some day saying, “I wish I had,…”

Free yourself of worries and burdensome thoughts. Love hard, laugh hard, play hard and live easy.

A New Kind of Christmas Treat

Wow!! Who can believe Christmas is less than two weeks away??? What a crazy time of year. This particular year it’s much less crazy for Keri and I because we made an agreement with each other to set a budget for us to replenish our savings account and pay off our credit card from all the expenses of the wedding/reception we had in October.

This agreement includes forgoing Christmas gift exchange. We’ve spoken with everyone we would have exchanged gifts with and everyone has been understanding and supportive. We are so blessed to be surrounded by such loving and understanding family and friends.

What this looks like in our house is we still have gotten a few things for Marbles, our golden retriever, but all the pressure of shopping and finding the perfect gift for everyone is GONE. Zero shopping??? Ummm,… I think this could be a new tradition.

We haven’t gotten a christmas tree since our previous golden, Waffles, was a puppy. We talked it over with Garrison before we made the decision because at the time he was only 12 and guess what!!! He was totally fine with it!!! We do put up stockings and in the past have always done stocking stuffers, but this year we’ve super simplified our lives and I really like it.

It got me thinking though, because it is such a crazy time for most, I think it’s a great time of year to set aside some time for ourselves. We, as a society, are so busy trying to make the perfect Christmas happen for all our loved ones, we often burn ourselves out, which makes it more difficult to enjoy the holiday ourselves. Therefore, I’d like to suggest that everyone who reads this blog make an agreement with themselves. Take it for what it’s worth or leave it for another time, but I’d like to see each of you agree to carve out a little time for yourself. Yes, it is a time for giving, so why leave yourself out. Give yourself permission to take a warm relaxing soak, pamper yourself with some epsom salt and lavender bubble bath, give yourself a time out to read a good book, pamper yourself with a manicure or get a massage.

Make time for yourself. It’s important to create balance in your life. It’s important to give to yourself the time you need to replenish and restore so that you may be your best for your loved ones. IMG_3054

Where Do You Live?

There is no better feeling than the feeling of knowing you’re making a positive healthy choice in your life. There are so many ways to make healthy choices, it’s not just about eating well and exercising. It’s also about being true to yourself.
An example of being true to yourself may be saying no and drawing a boundary. Everyone is excited about their own gig and just because Dick and Jane are into Salsa dancing and invite you to go doesn’t mean you have to say yes if that’s not your cup of tea.
The beautiful thing about life is the variety that’s available. If everyone loved salsa dancing, life would get a bit boring. I’ve never tried salsa dancing. I’m not opposed to it, but there’s not a huge draw for me in that direction. I love how diverse the world is and I love the opportunities in life to try new things.
Trying new things can be scary, but I think staying stuck in a rut is even more scary. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to get to the end of my life and have a pile of regrets. There’s so much to see and do, I can’t imagine doing the exact same thing all the time and not trying new things. I love challenging myself to get outside my comfort zone. I feel so alive when I’m living on the edge. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy my sense of security, but I also love the sense of adventure. Push the boundaries. Try new things, if you don’t like it, stop.
If you don’t try, you won’t know.
The secret to happiness is developing balance. Get out there and enjoy new things. Say, YES to life and trust your inner guidance. Know when it’s right for you to draw a boundary. It’s ok to say no and it’s ok to feel a little scared sometimes. Just know that stepping beyond feeling scared and into positive action exercises your brave muscles.

You’re not Alone

There are a million excuses not to exercise. I know because I’ve used many of them. What I can tell you about making and using excuses not to exercise is this, it makes me feel like crap!!! I don’t know about you, but personally, I don’t like to feel like crap.

I don’t particularly like exercising, but what I do like is feeling fit. I like that I can still wear the same size jeans I wore in high school. I like that I can be faced with a flight of 70 stairs to get down to the beach and I don’t think twice about taking them an extra 3 times just for the exercise. I like that when a vacation to Hawaii arrives, I try on a bikini, I look at myself in the mirror and don’t think, “Oh HELL NO!!!” That makes me feel good.

My focus on fitness and healthy eating helps me to feel young. Who doesn’t like feeling young? I like having the cardiovascular health to dance all night long if I wanted. I like being strong enough to be able to pick up my 70 lb dog if I need to.

         Fitness feels good to me.

So, when I don’t feel like working out, I remind myself how good it feels to be fit. When doughnuts, french fries and any number of other things smell tempting I remind myself how I feel when I eat those things. I’ve convinced myself on a number of occasions that those temptations are poison.

Do I ALWAYS resist? Hell no! I love french fries, but the majority of the time I’m making healthy choices. Sometimes, when I want french fries, I go to a grocery store deli and order 3 jojos. The clerk often gives me a weird look, but they always comply with my request. It’s always under a dollar and usually right around .50 cents. Anyway, it satisfies my french fry craving and is not a huge indiscretion.

Healthy living is a challenge for most people, myself included. What I’ve found to be integral to my success is making a decision to do it for myself, for my own sense of satisfaction and health and having a support system in place.

I admit I’m super lucky because my wife is an amazing source of support, plus she cooks yummy healthy meals. However, if you’re on a road to health and fitness and you feel you’re on your own there is no need to worry. There are lots of resources for support and encouragement. No one has to be alone on their journey to be fit or maintain health. If you’re new to fitness or have been at it for awhile and find yourself needing support, I encourage you to check out beachbody.com

I’ve found some amazing work out buddies in a couple of beach body challenges and even though Keri and I have each other to encourage and push each other along on our fitness journeys, I’ve found the support and camaraderie of my challenge group to be that little extra push I need sometimes. Thank you work out buddies.

Energy goes where attention flows

Take a deep breath and know that there are no mistakes. Everything happens exactly as it is supposed to with lessons and growth that go beyond our current level of comprehension, so with that knowledge, take a deep breath and trust your “knowing” what is right for you.

Today I am focusing my energy on health and placing my trust in the knowing.

Mindful choices

You may or may not believe this, but what I am about to tell you is an honest account of my experience. Since we started juicing and eating cleaner I have noticed the few times I’ve slipped into eating something not so clean, such as fried tortilla chips, cheddar covered french fries and pizza, that those not so clean foods really have a strong affect on my body. My taste buds don’t really like for me to acknowledge these things, but the whole fuckin’ rest of my body is doing back flips and cart wheels.

Here’s the thing, when I eat clean (meaning fresh, no preservatives and unprocessed) foods I feel so. much. better. What do I mean by better? I’ll tell you exactly what I mean by better. I have more energy. My body is more flexible. I feel lighter. My thought processes are clearer. I feel younger. My body feels tighter, I love the way my body feels tighter. You may be asking yourself how can eating these, “so-called” cleaner foods have that big of an affect on your body? It’s actually noticeable? Really? To that my friend I say, YES! YES, it is noticeable.

20140216-103249.jpgWhen I take in foods that are simple like a fresh salads, fresh juices, vegetable soups, and nut or bean based patties/burgers my body has less work to do to process those foods and get the nutrients and vitamins it needs to function. When I eat fried foods or processed foods, rich with preservatives and indigestibles it takes more energy for my body to process those foods and though my body is working harder it is finding less nutrients and vitamins available in those processed foods. In fact, not only is my body working harder to come up with less, it is also having to try and figure out what to do with all those preservatives and indigestibles, causing pain, swelling, and rashes.

If this were your fine driving automobile would you fill the tank with poor dirty fuel? Your nice looking sexy vehicle would sputter and painfully chug along with less than optimal preforming results. I can already hear you saying it, NO way!!! How many cars will you have in your life time? Me? I’m only 44 and I’ve already had 6! 6 cars and I can buy more cars. How many bodies have I had? ONLY ONE!

Guess what kind of fuel I will be opting to use for this ONE body that I have been so graciously given. I’m not saying that I am perfect and I will ALWAYS choose the best options available, but I can guarantee I will be making mindful choices for sure.

Two Crazy Girls

It was dark and muggy. It was 3am!!! We got up that early because, though it was muggy, much later in the day the heat would have been too thick to even walk through. Oklahoma heat is dangerous. I’m not even kidding, people die in Oklahoma because of the extreme high temperatures. Here we are, two crazy girls, out on our morning run, it was only 73degrees at 3am, but the humidity was like 5000%. It felt good though, to get out there and run, pushing our limits, working up a sweat and getting fit.

We had a few incidents on those dark hot mornings. One time we were running in our neighborhood and we saw someone headed in our direction on a bicycle. We were a little freaked out because it wasn’t just another health nut out on an early bike ride. He was a little creepy at first. He had a boom box attached to the handlebars of his little BMX bike. Did I mention he was a grown man? He was wearing coveralls and was biking kinda slowly and meandering a bit with his boom box playing. Keri and I exchanged a look and decided to just kept running and he past us like nothing. We saw him several times and he became less creepy to us, but another time we saw a dark figure crossing someone’s yard wearing white gloves at 3o’clock in the morning and that REALLY freaked us out. We stopped in our tracks and I don’t remember if we said anything to each other or just exchanged a look that conveyed the idea that we should run as fast as we could back to the house, but that is exactly what we did. We did a quick about face and made a bee line in for the house. That was the fastest run we clocked that summer.

I am stuck on band aid, cause band aid’s stuck on me.

On yet another run and neither of us remember how this happened, but we were on our last couple of turns and headed home when Keri tripped and fell. It was as if we were in a movie that was being edited and the person viewing this clip of the movie put us on super slow motion. She was falling to the ground and thinking how can i make this better and I was reacting and trying to help her in a way that I was totally clueless to, because I ended up not being able to help at all, but Keri actually did manage to direct herself towards the grass. We we running on the street next to the curb and she landed half way in the grass and half way in the street as if the curb were dividing her in half down the middle. So her right hand and right knee got pretty banged up.

I can’t remember if she was crying or not, probably not, but I went to her sitting in the grass of one our neighbors (yes, it was about 3:30 in the morning) and I was evaluating her injuries. She had gravel in the heel of her hand and dirt and grit in her knee. The first words of comfort I was able to muster were, “Ya know, we’re going to have to clean that”. She looked up at me and clear as day, her eyes were audibly speaking the words, Are you fuckin’ kidding me?

It didn’t take long for me to realize those were just about the worst words I could have chosen to comfort her. How comforting is that? I realize you just fell and are still on the ground in quite a bit of pain so, just to be clear on where we are, you know we’re going to have to clean that. Geez, Angel!!! Why don’t you carry little alcohol packets with you and clean it before the first drop of blood begins to puddle? We walked back to the house and if my memory serves me correctly I’m pretty sure we did not clean those wounds right away. We probably ran cool water over it, but taking the q-tips to it with peroxide was out of the question. If you don’t know Keri, you might not be clear on how things operate once she’d set her mind to an idea. I just thought of a new nick name for her Stubburnidge.

To this day when either of us gets a cut or gets injured, we say, “Ya’ know, we’re going to have to clean that.” We have a pretty good little laugh about it, but only because we both have grown and can laugh at our previous less wise selves.

To cleanse or not to cleanse,…

The juice cleanse has gone fabulously. I feel amazing and have experienced a level of clarity and connectedness that is difficult to describe, but amazing to feel. I have to be honest though, we have not ONLY been juicing. I don’t want to mislead anyone into thinking we have been surviving on fresh fruit and vegetable juices for the last two weeks, although, that doesn’t mean that it can’t be done. It certainly CAN be and many many people have done it. Joe Cross of the documentary film Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead, did a 60 day juice cleanse and inspired many people around the world to do their own juice cleanses, all varied amounts of time and various results.

We decided we wanted to incorporate smoothies and we also began eating a combination of raw and cooked vegan foods. It has been a delicious wonderful experience. I have to be honest though, (it seems like I say that alot) it’s not a barrel full of awesome sauce. There is the downside of the feelings associated with detoxifying your body. It is rarely mentioned in all the books and movies about juicing/cleansing, or I just somehow overlooked the mention of the downside because I was so excited about the upside.

Keri felt a little sick accompanied with a pretty nasty headache for almost a whole day about 3 days into the cleanse and we attribute that to the toxins leaving her body. When you do a cleanse it allows your body to release old bacteria, viruses and toxins in your system that need to be flushed out in order to be healthy. Cleansing allows these toxins to be being released into the blood faster than the body can handle comfortably, causing feelings of being sick and a headache in some people.

I didn’t really ever have a sick feeling, but I did have a pretty big emotional reaction. On about the 7th day of our clean eating deal, I had an emotional breaking point that resulted in a crying session that lasted about 3 hours. All that crying did end up giving me a pretty bad headache.

protein called neuropeptide

The science of the body processing food and emotions is pretty amazing. Emotions create chemical reactions in your body and when you don’t deal with those emotions those chemicals settle into the body and are stored there until you deal with those emotions or a symptom occurs. I believe in my case when I began cleansing my body with the juice it stirred up those unprocessed emotions and they came flooding out in my tears.

The nutrients of the juice are so easy for your body to process that it goes into your blood stream in about 10-15 minutes, opposed to the nutrients of solid cooked food which takes about 2-2.5 hours. Plus, your body has to work harder to get what it needs out of that solid cooked food and after all that hard work your body finds less nutrition is available because the heat of cooking food depletes the natural occurring vitamins.

So, with these feelings of being sick, headaches and long crying sessions would I recommend doing a cleanse to others? Absolutely!!! The benefits far out weigh the short period of downside effects. The lightness I feel in my body, the clarity of my brain, the energy I am feeling and the happiness I feel knowing that I am actively doing something for the health of my body is all very amazing and well worth the short period of side affects. It beats the hell out of the side effects associated with medications that doctors are prescribing.

Let’s see a little sick with a headache or a session of crying verses anal leakage, lymphoma, anxiety or suicidal thoughts. Hmmm, let me think,… Cleanse!!! Every single time.
